The islands of the Caribbean were relatively unexplored by tourists until the 1980s, when the tourist industry began to make a real impact on the region.

The Caribbean enjoys warm weather all year round, however the islands are sometimes susceptible to hurricanes and storms from June to November. This has done little to dissuade many tourists, as the weather is still enjoyable during these months.

Hotels of all standards exist on all the islands, catering for both those looking for an upmarket, exclusive holiday and families looking for all-inclusive package holidays.

Activities tend to be hotel-based, with traditional music and dancing available on a nightly basis, either in the hotel grounds or on the beach. During the day, sun worshippers usually either stretch out on the world-class beaches or explore the local markets and villages. Those who are more active enjoy watersports including scuba diving, exploring the stunning coral reefs surrounding the islands, and beautiful aquatic life, whilst others enjoy a round of golf on the impressive courses.

Typical Caribbean cuisine tends to be rustic in style, with jerk chicken, curried goat and goat stew being particular favourites. However, there is also a strong Spanish influence throughout the region, so spices, lime and garlic are also widely used. With most meals being eaten in the hotels, however, there are of course a wide variety of dishes available.

Caribbean islands including Antigua and Barbados remain prime holiday spots for British holidaymakers, showing no signs of decreasing in popularity. Last minute deals and all inclusive holidays are always available, offering an excellent opportunity to escape to the sun.
