Lanzarote

Fancy a holiday next to an active volcano? Don’t worry, it’s not as dangerous as it sounds! Thousands flock every year to see the Timanfaya National Park, which covers a gently simmering volcano, and this sums up the attraction of Lanzarote beautifully.

The most easterly of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is situated less than 100 miles off the coast of North Africa. Fantastic beaches can be found at Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca (literally “white beach”) and Puerto del Carmen and watersports are widely available.

Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, with a host of archaeologically-intriguing sites to explore. A bustling sea port, there are many boutiques and bazaars in which you can spend many happy hours.

Halfway down the island and on its coastline lies Costa Teguise, one of Lanzarote’s main tourist resorts. A purpose-built tourist area, it is renowned for excellent windsurfing conditions and has a fantastic beach, as well as shops, bars and restaurants. The nightlife here, whilst entertaining, is certainly not rowdy – ideal for couples and young families.

The most southerly resort on Lanzarote is Playa Blanca. A recent newcomer to tourism, the area was originally a fishing village but is being sympathetically developed and is fast-becoming an upmarket resort. There is a wonderful promenade running along most of the length of the resort, with several sheltered bays making ideal sunbathing spots.

Stretching almost five miles, Puerto del Carmen is a typical tourist resort, offering beautiful beaches, ample sports facilities and a number of shops and restaurants. If you’re looking for cheap holidays to Lanzarote, Puerto del Carmen could be a great choice.
