Gran Canaria

It’s all about sand on Gran Canaria. From the stunning beaches to the fascinating sand dunes at Maspalomas, this island offers fun, sun – and as much relaxation as you need.

The main resorts here are Play del Ingles, Maspalomas and Puerto Rico, which all have bars and restaurants lining their beach. However, further inland, pine forests and volcanic areas provide some great hiking and mountain biking terrain.

Sited around 30 minutes from Las Palmas airport, Meloneras has only recently discovered tourism. There is a pretty promenade which runs the entire length of the beach, alongside which there are a number of tourist shops and restaurants.

Las Palmas is the main city on Gran Canaria and has been designated the second capital of the Canary Islands. With five beaches and a bustling port, its mix of sand and busy city life is a sure fire winner with many tourists looking for a last minute deal.

There are almost five miles of beach in Maspalomas, in addition to its miles of sand dunes. A quieter resort, there are a number of hotels along the beachfront, offering all inclusive holiday packages. However, tourists are catered for, with theme parks and golf courses nearby.

Playa del Ingles is Gran Canaria’s largest holiday resort. A particular favourite of young revellers in the summer, it is much quieter outside peak season, with its focus particularly on its beach.

Another artificial beach is in place at Puerto Rico. A smaller resort, it is rumoured to attract the best sun on the island. The emphasis here is on watersports, with sailing, big game fishing and windsurfing available. There are also a number of golf courses, a shopping centre and a waterpark nearby.
