Fuerteventura

Slightly more upmarket and quieter than some of the other Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is of course most famous for its watersports and fantastic beaches, with more than 150 to choose from.

Thought to be the oldest island in the Canaries, Fuerteventura also offers many sites of archaeological interest and of course if you really want to get away from it all, there are daily boat trips to the virtually uninhabited island of Lobos, just over the water.

The main tourist area on the island is Corralejo, where several watersports competitions are held each year. The town itself was originally a fishing port and still retains a good sense of its original character, but now boasts a modern marina and its own sheltered beach. There are a number of shops, bars and restaurants, which cater principally for couples and families.

Nearby, there are a couple of larger beaches catering for sunbathers, miles of sand dunes and a nature reserve.

Still being sensitively developed, Fuerteventura is one of the quietest islands in the Canaries, although there is sufficient nightlife and entertainment to suite all ages. If you’re looking for a last minute deal to indulge in a week or two of sunbathing, or perhaps perfect your skills as a windsurfer, Fuerteventura, and Corralejo, is certainly the place for you.
