Dominican Republic

With average temperatures reaching 80° all year round, the Dominican Republic is a firm favourite for Brits looking for an all-inclusive holiday to somewhere more exotic.

Over four million tourists flock to the island each year, attracted by the sunshine, calm turquoise waters, beautiful sandy beaches and the locals’ vibrant approach to life.

Punta Cana lies to the east of the island and is best known for its stunning beaches and safe bathing. There is a mix of cultures here, with Spanish, Mexican and traditional Dominican residents combining to make a colourful population.

Bavaro lies just along the coastline, in the same province as Punta Cana. A working town and therefore more urban, there are a good number of shops, bars and restaurants here.

Puerto Plata on the other hand, set against a mountain range on the north coast of the island, is distinctly more tropical and focuses on the tourist industry, playing host to a number of resorts, beaches and golf courses.

For those looking for some astounding natural beauty, Bayahibe is an ideal choice. Set on the edge of the Parque Nactional del Este, this small fishing village is surrounded by a handful of holiday resorts. Renowned for its excellent diving facilities, the area is famous for its caves and limestone formations, as well as its postcard-perfect beaches – and the possibility of meeting up with manatees and dolphins!

Playa Dorada, similar to San Juan, is principally a manufactured holiday resort, so you can guarantee that everything you need is close at hand. Watersports, shopping, golf courses, nightlife and cinemas – you’re guaranteed never to have a boring moment at Playa Dorada.

The Dominican Republic then, is an island of contrasts. Regardless of what you’re looking for – a true taste of the island itself, a well-earned rest or a diving extravaganza, you can bet you’ll find it here.
